Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

The automobiles of the future are here today and they use Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Today ADAS are systems designed to assist the driver to increase car safety and promote an overall safer road network. ADAS’ use technology in a vehicle to help avoid collisions by either alerting the driver about potential problems and/or taking control of the vehicle. ADAS may be used in basic vehicle functions such as lighting, braking and cruise control or more complex functions such as traffic warnings, GPS, traffic warnings, connection to smartphones, blind spots, proximity to other drivers, and correct lane use. ADI has a large portfolio of devices for ADAS and Autonomous Driving applications. LIDAR

LIDAR, is similar to RADAR but instead of emitting a sound wave emits light pulses or laser to create a real time 3D physical world. LIDAR can more accurately than RADAR, place objects in relationship to each other. A current use of LIDAR today is that many law enforcement agencies are replacing their RADAR guns with LIDAR guns to catch speeders. LIDAR in an automobile application could create a 3D world with car and surrounding objects such as other cars and trucks, unexpected objects in the path or road location. Once detected the automobile can make adjustments for the safety of the occupants.

RADAR

RADAR has been around for nearly eighty years. In the most basic sense RADAR emits a radio waves and by the return signal can identify size, direction of movement and other data from an object. Today RADAR is used in aircraft, military, weather and automotive applications. In the automotive industry, traditionally RADAR was used by Law Enforcement. With ADAS, RADAR can be used to accurately locate surrounding objects to an automobile.

Vision

We live in a visual world and now our automobiles are living in it as well. In ADAS applications accurate identifying objects is important in pedestrian and car safety. Just think of the possibilities of a car being able to visually identify a person, a car or a tree and then react accordingly or the ability to identify the color of a traffic light or other objects. For example, a car could be coming to an intersection that is green however it also detects a pedestrian in the walk way crossing the street. With both sets of data the car could then assess the appropriate action and if the driver is not reacting fast enough it could take control and apply the brakes.

Infotainment is a combination of information and entertainment. Even though the term infotainment is relatively new, the actual technology has been a part of the automobile industry from a long time. Intelligent Battery Systems

Analog Devices provides complete system solutions for battery monitoring in 12V lead-acid automotive applications. These devices integrate all the required features to determine precisely and intelligently the battery state-of-charge and state-of-health. Minimizing external system components, these devices are powered directly from the 12V battery and feature ARM7™ integrated microcontrollers.
