PCA9421 PMIC
NXP's power management IC is ideal for low-power applications for the IoT and industrial markets
Adding on to the PMIC family for low-power applications, NXP's PCA9421 is a highly integrated power management IC (PMIC), targeted to provide a full-power management solution for low-power microcontroller applications or other similar applications.
The device integrates two step-down (buck) DC/DC converters and two low dropout linear regulators (LDO) which have I²C programmable output voltage.
Both buck regulators have integrated high-side and low-side switches and related control circuitry to minimize the external component counts. A pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) approach is utilized to achieve better efficiency under light load conditions.
Other protection features include overcurrent protection (OCP), undervoltage lockout (UVLO), thermal regulation, warning, shutdown, and watchdog features.
The PCA9420 includes a battery charger and is appropriate for systems with a battery, while the PCA9421 offers the same PMIC functionality without the battery charger.
The PCA9421 extends battery life thanks to NXP's light load power efficiency, ultra-low standby power, two integrated high-efficiency buck regulators, two low dropout linear regulators (LDOs), an ultra-small footprint, and built-in mode transition function for fast PMIC operation mode switch working together with the target MCU / MPU (i.MX 8M, 9X) and in specific MCX N94x and N54x MCUs with dual-core Arm® Cortex®-M33, EdgeLock® secure subsystem, and neural processing unit.
Easily compatible with an array of different MCU operation modes, it has enabled a wave of power-efficient devices for Li-ion battery-powered low-power applications, such as hearables, fitness bands, and watches.
These devices are characterized across a -40°C to +85°C ambient temperature range, designed for IoT and industrial applications.
