This project is a modification to the standard XRP chassis that ships with the kit. I found that the turning accuracy for the standard chassis was difficult, especially when being controlled manually and on different surfaces. The modification stretches the length of the chassis and replaces the caster wheels with free-spinning front and rear wheels. The powered wheels are centered front to back and are slightly dropped. This is a configuration historically used in FIRST Robotics Competition robots before the rise of the swerve drive.
As a mentor of an FRC, I was looking for projects to emulate the larger robots with mechanisms similar to those commonly used in competition. It made sense to have a chassis that would behave similarly to the larger robots. Here is an example robot that uses the tank chassis as a base for a small-scale FRC Rebuilt-style robot. As it is still an XRP component, any mechanisms could be added to the chassis.
