The period of the event can be changed by changing the number of counts needed to reach the overflow condition. This can be done by modifying the start value of the timer. In the last example, the timer stared at a value of 0x0000. In the diagram here, the starting value has been changed to 0x0FFF which reduces the number of counts need to reach the overflow event. When the timer overflows it “reloads” this value into the timer register and is called the Reload value. In the previous example, there were 65,536 cycles before the overflow event occurred because the timer started at 0x0000. In this example, the overflow count of 65,536 is the same but the reload value is set to 4,096. The difference of these values, 61440 cycles, is the number of counts needed to reach the overflow condition.
