For the LCD to operate correctly and to preserve the life of the display the voltage to the segments needs to be AC with a 0 V DC component. The LCD controller generates the waveforms used to drive the segments of the display. The output voltage is the difference between the common waveform and the intermediate segment waveform. In the example above, the “ON” condition is shown and is the result of subtracting the segment waveform from the common waveform which produces a 0V DC biased AC waveform.
